TRYON—Conserving Carolina recently nominated two of its dedicated volunteers, Liz Dicey and Ford Smith, for induction into the Second Wind Hall of Fame. Both were officially inducted on July 14—Liz at a staff and volunteer gathering at the home of Carole Bartol, and Ford at the Tryon Coffee House alongside Kudzu Warriors, staff, and volunteers.

Liz Dicey has served two terms on the Conserving Carolina Board, contributing her time to the Education Committee, the pollinator garden at the Polk County Library, roadside trash pickups, and more. She co-chairs the SE Community Forum, serves on the Polk County Democratic Women’s Executive Committee, and volunteers with FETA and Foothills Humane Society.

Originally from Reidsville, N.C., Liz moved to Polk County in 2011. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Animal Science and Philosophy from the University of New Hampshire, a Master’s in Communications from Syracuse University, and a Master’s in Education and Library Science from UNC. She is married to Don Dicey and has two children and two grandchildren. In her free time, Liz enjoys horseback riding, gardening, reading, cooking, hiking, and spending time with animals. Known for her organization and communication skills, she hopes to be remembered for her honesty, positivity, and ability to bring out the best in others.

Ford Smith, also honored for his continued post-retirement service, has been deeply involved in environmental and civic efforts. He has served on the Conserving Carolina Board, the former Pacolet Area Conservancy Board, and is a founding member of the Kudzu Warriors. He also serves on the Polk County Appearance Committee.

Ford moved to the area in 1993 from Charlotte, where he worked as a teacher and counselor in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School System and taught computer science at Queens College. He earned a Bachelor’s degree in Education from Wake Forest and a Master’s degree in Counseling. He is married to Michelle Keys and has two children. Ford enjoys photography, gardening, hiking, traveling, and reading. He has visited all 50 states and authored several books. He hopes to be remembered for his nonprofit work and commitment to community service.
