TRYON—A paper-making workshop hosted by Nancy Basket will take place at FENCE on Saturday, August 2, from 9 a.m. to noon.. No experience is necessary to attend.
During the workshop, Nancy will lead students in creating several sheets of colored paper from kudzu leaves. Pre-dried kudzu paper will also be supplied for students to create their own paper collage. Students should wear old clothes that they do not mind getting dye on, as Rit Dye is used to color the paper.
Basket has been coiling and weaving vessels for over 40 years since she helped start the first basketry guild in the US in modern times. She uses pine needles, kudzu, and other invasive species. Moving South from Washington state in 1989, she has taught in public schools as an artist in education. Nancy makes eight-foot coiled sculptures depicting Cherokee stories, five-foot chandeliers, and miniatures as big as a thumbnail. Nancy’s 100-year-old barn and workshop are retrofitted with kudzu bales, where she makes her handmade paper from kudzu leaves in Walhalla, SC.
