MILL SPRING— On August 16 and August 17, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Tryon International Equestrian Center will host a Portuguese Water Dog Trial, organized by the Movers and Shakers Portuguese Water Dog Club. This event will showcase the skills and intelligence of these remarkable working dogs.

Entry to the event will be through 2659 Sandy Plains Rd., where guests can park and then walk back to the lakeside venue, perfect for an enjoyable day out with friends and family.

Portuguese Water Dog trials highlight the breed’s natural swimming and retrieving abilities, reflecting their historical role as working dogs on fishing boats. These trials involve various exercises, such as retrieving objects from the water, swimming long distances, and working from boats, testing both the dog’s physical prowess and its bond with the handler.

The history of the breed has deep roots along the coast of Portugal, where they served not only as companions but also as essential aid to fishermen. These dogs lived aboard fishing boats, learning to retrieve nets and other items, and even delivering items between vessels and to shore. Their exceptional swimming ability, combined with a strong instinct for diving underwater, made them invaluable to the fishing community.

Spectators are encouraged to bring a chair and enjoy the demonstrations as these talented canine athletes perform a variety of exciting tasks. Attendees will have the opportunity to watch firsthand the unique abilities that make the Portuguese Water Dog a cherished companion and valued working partner.
