SALUDA—The historic Saluda Depot Museum will host the next “Train Tales” on Friday, July 18, with a presentation by professional photographer Jeffrey Stoner, who will share his insights on “Train Photography Tips.” This talk will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. at the museum, located at 32 W. Main St. Attendance is free, with donations graciously accepted.

His talk will highlight the artistry of train photography as well as pay homage to the vital role that railroads have played in the history and development of Saluda and Western North Carolina.

Stoner says he looks to transcend traditional boundaries with his work.

“I believe beauty, wonder, and mystery can be found whether taking wildlife and landscape shots in the middle of a winter blizzard or cityscapes on a summer morning,” he says. “My goal is for others, through my photography, to experience the feeling and spirit of these moments.”

In addition to Stoner’s presentation, the “Train Tales” series will feature a variety of other engaging talks in coming months. August 16 will see Marion Mayor Steven Little discussing the history of “Convicts who built the Railway,” while September 20 will feature Ray Rapp, who will tackle the topic of “Real Prospects for Restoring Passenger Rail Service to Western North Carolina.” Each presentation promises to illuminate different facets of the region’s rich railway heritage.

The Saluda Historic Depot and Museum, which operates from Thursday through Saturday from 12 to 4 p.m. and on Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m., offers a treasure trove of information and artifacts related to the region’s railway history. Special group tours can be arranged on any day of the week.
