Murphy sworn in as Polk County Schools superintendent

Polk County Schools officially has a new leader.

Todd Murphy was sworn in Friday as the district’s new superintendent during a scheduled meeting of the Polk County Board of Education at Stearns Education Center.

Murphy replaces Aaron Greene, who is retiring after a 31-year career in Polk County Schools, the last nine of those as superintendent.

Murphy’s daughter, Peyton, participated in the swearing-in ceremony.

The new superintendent has worked in the district since 2015, holding administrative roles at Polk County Middle School and Tryon Elementary School. He moved to the district office in 2023 as human resources director.

After starting his educational career as a teacher and coach, Murphy moved into administration in 2007 as the assistant principal and athletic director at Hendersonville High School. He held that position for four years before spending the next two years as principal at Mills River Elementary School.

Murphy holds a bachelor’s degree in secondary education from Trevecca University in Nashville, Tenn., and a master’s in school administration from Gardner-Webb University.
