Tailored especially for families with children ages 6 to 12, this two-hour event is all about celebrating one of our region’s most fascinating reptiles—the Eastern Box Turtle. Kids and their families will enjoy an interactive presentation led by Champions for Wildlife’s expert educators, along with special guest Pat Newton, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator. Pat will introduce attendees to one of her rescue turtles, giving kids a rare chance to meet this remarkable creature up close.

During the presentation, kids will learn about the contributions box turtles make to our ecosystems, what makes them so unique (hint: they’ve been around since the time of the dinosaurs!), and how we can all help protect their habitats.

Afterward, the fun continues with a turtle-themed art activity that each child can take home—a creative way to remember all they learned and share the experience with others.

“This event is more than just a morning of fun,” says Alexis Hinchliffe, Education Manager at Champions for Wildlife. “These summer events are important because they bring families together around something that matters—the wild world around them. When parents get involved, the learning expands beyond the classroom!”

Wild for Turtles is made possible by a generous grant from the Polk County Community Foundation.

This event is one of three exciting Wild for Summer programs happening this season. Champions for Wildlife’s next event, “Wild for Birds,” will feature a bird nature walk and art activity on July 30.
