At Foothills Equestrian Trails Association (FETA), we strive to ensure that everyone can enjoy the beauty of Tryon safely and respectfully. As part of our commitment to preserving the area’s equestrian heritage, we’ve put together this friendly PSA to help guide the public in properly interacting with horses and riders when you’re out and about.

First, always respect trail riders. FETA preserves historic trails used primarily by horseback riders. If you’re driving near riders on the trail, always reduce your speed and avoid honking, as loud noises can startle the horses. Give them plenty of space, staying at least 10 feet away when passing. Patience goes a long way in ensuring a safe experience for everyone.
It’s also essential to avoid approaching horses on private property. Horses are often kept on private properties in the area. Never approach a horse without the owner’s permission. While it may seem tempting to feed them, this can be dangerous. Horses can have allergies or dietary restrictions, and feeding them inappropriate food can result in choking, digestive issues, or even poisoning.
Also, if you’re given permission to feed a horse, always ask the owner what’s safe to offer. Horses can easily choke on large pieces of food, like carrots, or ingest something that isn’t part of their normal diet. Feeding them something they’re allergic to can cause serious health problems. Always follow the owner’s guidelines to keep the horse safe.
Respecting property boundaries is paramount. When riding near private properties or walking along trails, be mindful of fences, gates, and property lines. The Tryon area is rich in equestrian culture, and respecting these boundaries helps maintain harmony within the community.
By following these simple etiquette tips, you help ensure that Tryon remains a safe and welcoming space for both equestrians and the community. Thank you for your cooperation and support!
