Born September 7, 1927, in Omaha, NE, to Dr. Lloyd Oliver Hoffman and Gladys Mae Heacock Hoffman.

Bud was a rambunctious child growing up in Dundee and later in a home on a farm his parents built on N. River Rd. overlooking the Iowa River.

Bud enjoyed summers at his family’s cabin on Lake of the Woods, in Ontario, Canada, where he met his future wife, Joann Eklund, daughter of Dr. Harley Sven Eklund and Mary Fulweider Eklund of Osceola, NE, who also owned a summer cabin on the lake.

Joann and Bud’s was a High School/College romance that flourished as Joann transferred to Brownell Hall Academy in Omaha and Bud attended University of Nebraska Omaha (Class of 1949). He also served for a while in the Merchant Marines near the end of WWII and was always proud of his Veteran status. Bud and Joann were married on November 25, 1949.

Bud began his career in the Paper Industry with Carpenter Paper Co. in Omaha and was later transferred to the Twin Cities, where he and Joann settled in St. Paul, MN, while Joann matriculated towards her Degree at the University of Minnesota (Class of 1954). After Joann had graduated, they gave birth to their first child, Lloyd Oliver Hoffman III, “Trip”.  They later had a daughter, Ann Chamberlain, a son, Frederick Eklund “Rick”, and identical twins, Katherine “Kate” and Elizabeth “Beth”.

In 1965, Bud moved his family to Annapolis, MD, where he had taken a position with Nationwide Paper Co. in Baltimore. His family enjoyed an idyllic life in Maryland, and Bud was active in Community Groups, Charitable Organizations, and the Annapolis Pony Club. Bud was also a member of the Annapolis Yacht Club and Bay Hills Golf Club.

Bud joined Ris Paper Co. of New York in 1970 when he took over running the former R. P. Andrews Paper Co. in Washington, D.C., which Ris had acquired to anchor its Mid-Atlantic operations. Bud enjoyed a 25+ year career with Ris as Senior Vice President in charge of the Mid-Atlantic region, later acquiring paper companies in Baltimore, MD, and Richmond, VA.  Bud and Joann thought of the company as their extended family and formed lifetime relationships while traveling, golfing, and socializing with company employees throughout the U.S.  Bud formally retired in 1992 but continued to serve on the Ris Board of Directors.

Bud and Joann moved to Key West, FL, where he was actively involved in the social,

charitable, golfing, and boating communities. He was a member of the Key West Golf

Club and the Key West Yacht Club.

A highlight of Bud and Joann’s retirement was when they purchased an RV, packed up, and moved onboard to travel the U.S. and Mexico for over a year.

Bud and Joann later moved to Tryon, NC, to be nearer to their son Trip as they entered their “Silver Years”.  In Tryon, Bud was active with numerous civic and community organizations, served as President of their Condo Board, and was a member of the Tryon Country Club. Joann passed away in August of 2021 after enjoying 71 years of marriage.  Bud passed away on June 10, 2025, at Tryon Estates, in the company of family.

Bud is predeceased by his two sisters, Shird Rydman (Bob), Phyd Engdahl (Wally), a brother-in-law, Gregg Eklund (Barbara), and his son Trip.
