Our beloved Liz Smith, “Mugga,” passed away on June 13th, 2025. Born in Greensburg, Pennsylvania on July 31, 1939, Elizabeth Ann Katrosh Smith, best known as “Mugga” to those who love her, was the daughter of Philip and Margaret Katrosh. She was an outstanding mother to her three sons in New Jersey and later in South Carolina. When her children were grown, she worked for over a decade at the Tryon Daily Bulletin in Tryon, NC. In her most recent years, she devoted time and service to veterans on the Steering Committee for The SFC Charles A. Judge Memorial Stand Down.

Surviving are her husband, Vincent Gregory Smith, Jr., and sister, Barbara Judge Briant, of Landrum, SC; sons, Robert Phillip Smith (Paige) and James Michael Smith (Shelly) of Campobello; grandchildren, Andrew Smith (Areil) of Knoxville, Tenn.; Cameron Smith (Melanie) of Inman, SC; Sophia Smith and Layton Smith of Campobello, SC; great-grandchildren Carter and Benjamin Smith of Inman; and Dayton and Oliver Smith of Knoxville, Tenn.; and one nephew, Scott Katrosh (Wendy) of Simpsonville, SC. In addition to her parents, Liz is predeceased by her oldest son, Vincent Gregory Smith, III; her brother, Phillip Katrosh; and her nephew SFC Charles A. Judge, Jr.

Liz devoted her life to her husband, family and friends. She and her siblings were very closely bonded and Phil and Barbara were always an integral part of Liz’s life. After marrying her husband of 67 years, she became an amazing wife and homemaker. She was a dedicated school volunteer, and an enthusiastic supporter of sports, scouting, or band. Whatever her children pursued, she supported them with her whole heart. “Mugga” provided many meaningful experiences for her children and grandchildren as it was particularly important to her that her family make precious memories as they experienced the world around them. Liz enjoyed many friends, always loved a good game – especially push rummy – and even adapted to playing cards online with her sister and their friend, Judy, in recent years. She loved to laugh and always did so with a special twinkle in her eye. She will be remembered for her welcoming spirit and generous heart.

The family will receive friends at the Petty Funeral Home in Landrum, SC on Wednesday, June 18th from 1:00 – 2:00. Services will follow at 2:00 in the chapel. Burial will be at Evergreen Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the SFC Charles A. Judge, Jr. Memorial Stand Down P.O. Box 1212, Woodruff, SC 29388 or Spartanburg Regional Hospice at 686 Jeff Davis Drive, Spartanburg, SC, 29303.
