TRYON—The Town of Tryon has appointed Josh Connell as the interim fire chief following the departure of former Chief Josh Walton, who has accepted a position in another town.
Connell’s firefighting journey began at the Asheville Fire Department, where he was hired immediately upon graduating from the Fire Academy. After dedicating seven years to Asheville, in 2020, he brought his expertise and commitment to the Tryon Fire Department. Beyond his firefighting duties, Connell has played an active role in community outreach, leading programs such as a firefighter-led reading initiative for children, the Shop-With-A-Hero event for underprivileged youth, and a Secret Santa program. He has also collaborated with the local Humane Society to support various causes.
“I’m looking forward to serving the community as interim fire chief,” said Connell. “We provide a service with pride, dedication, and excellence.”
Mayor Alan Peoples expressed his appreciation for both chiefs, particularly noting Connell’s recognition as the Career Fire Officer of the Year in 2023 by the North Carolina Association of Fire Chiefs.
Mayor Peoples also acknowledged Chief Walton’s significant contributions to the community, especially his success in implementing one of the mayor’s goals of 24-hour fire service in Tryon, which ensures at least one, and often two, firefighters are on call around the clock.
Former Chief Josh Walton, who has served in his role in Tryon since July 2021, has transitioned to become the Chief of Edneyville Fire & Rescue. Walton was raised in Henderson County and has previously worked part-time at the Edneyville Fire Department.
Peoples said that the process of determining the next fire chief usually takes five to six months.
