TRYON— Following a 36-year coaching career, including 32 years as head coach at Winthrop University, Ben Paxton was recently announced as the full-time indoor track meet coordinator at Tryon International Equestrian Center as it gears up to debut its custom-designed Mondo Super X 720 track.
“I think the reason I was drawn to Tryon International Equestrian Center is the opportunity to help build up the grassroots level in the community,” said Paxton. “We are keen on hosting high school meets and potentially establishing an indoor state championship to energize the local community.”
The new facility not only promises to draw competitive events but also aims to be a hub for developmental training.
“We envision hosting local teams to make the track accessible and familiar,” he shared. “The more we engage with the community, the better recognition this facility will gain.”
The new facility will feature a custom-designed Mondo Super X 720 track, which is well-known for its durability and is the preferred surface for countless Olympic competitions.
“Mondo is a name brand that has been recognized in the track community for years,” Paxton noted. “They approached me after I decided to retire in January and asked if I would be interested in this new project.”
Set to open in December 2025, the new indoor complex will accommodate over 3,300 spectators, providing an immersive experience for both fans and athletes. The track boasts a multi-radius design and 12-degree banking, aiming to become one of the fastest tracks in the nation.
Reflecting on the unique aspects of the TIEC facility, Paxton mentioned its design will include dedicated warm-up areas and amenities to support athletes during competition.
“It’s not just about having a surface; we want to create an environment where athletes can thrive,” he noted.
As the prospect of indoor competition draws closer, anticipation builds for the facility’s opening. The goal is to host meets beginning in early December, setting the stage for a busy winter season filled with events, including potential high school showcases and even state championships.
Paxton expressed his enthusiasm for the future of track and field in the area, highlighting mounting interest in the sport.
“This facility is going to be an asset to our community and beyond,” he said.
