Keidi Aguilera, a rising junior at Polk County High School, has been named the recipient of this year’s Robert Jason Fox Memorial Award.

The award honors the memory of Jason Fox, a Polk County native who attended local schools from kindergarten through his sophomore year of high school. Fox was among the first freshman class to attend the new Polk County High School in Columbus when it opened in fall 1992.

Fox was diagnosed with leukemia early in his sophomore year in 1993, requiring him to withdraw from school for treatment. He died in early 1994.

During his brief time at the high school, Fox earned recognition as a serious student, accomplished athlete and responsible young man with a reputation for integrity and good citizenship. He was known for his sense of humor and served as a role model for his peers.

An anonymous donor established the annual award to recognize a sophomore student who demonstrates personal qualities similar to Fox’s. Recipients receive a citation designed by artist Julia Williams and a foxhead pin designed by sculptor William Behrends. The sterling silver pin symbolizes Fox’s character.

Aguilera is the daughter of Alfonso Aguilera and Carmela Santibanez.

Recipients of the award are expected to honor Fox’s memory and uphold the values the recognition represents.
