Polk County High School head wrestling coach Thomas Hensley has resigned after three seasons leading the program.
Hensley cited personal priorities for his resignation after building the Wolverines into one of the state’s top 1A programs.
“This decision is very hard, but I know it is the right one,” he said. “Since I was 16, wrestling has been my idol, and my dream was to be a great coach. While I still love the sport, I want to practice what I preach. My priorities in life have changed, and I can’t afford the same passion and drive that I once had.”
Hensley led the Wolverines to one of their best seasons in program history in 2024-25. Polk qualified a record nine wrestlers for the state tournament, also setting a school mark with four semifinalists. Sophomore Efrain Rivera placed second in the state at 120 pounds and set a school record with 56 wins.
All nine state qualifiers return next season. Rivera’s finish meant that the Wolverines had a state placer in all three seasons with Hensley at the helm of the program.
Polk County finished with a 35-6 dual meet record, reaching the quarterfinals of the state 1A Dual Team tourney before suffering a narrow loss to perennial power Robbinsville.
“I am proud of what the kids built at PCHS in my three years as head coach, and I know they will continue to grow and develop into a state championship program.”
