Polk County’s baseball season came to an abrupt conclusion Friday evening as the Wolverines fell 10-0 to Christ The King in the second round of the 1A state playoffs.
The Crusaders wasted no time establishing dominance, with Patrick Walsh crushing a home run on the first pitch of the bottom of the first inning. That early blow set the tone for what would become a challenging night for the Wolverines.
Christ The King (16-7) built a quick 4-0 lead in the first inning and steadily added to their advantage throughout the contest, which ended after six innings.
Queens University signee Owen Shipman delivered a commanding performance on the mound for the Crusaders, striking out eight Wolverine batters while walking five in five innings of work. Shipman limited Polk County to just four hits.
Freshman Nate Fagan provided the brightest spot in Polk County’s offense, going 2-for-3 with a double. Avrey Hensley and Alex Perry each contributed single hits for the Wolverines.
Walsh dominated at the plate for Christ The King, finishing with a perfect 4-for-4 day that included two RBI, three runs scored and the tone-setting home run.
The loss concludes Polk County’s season with a 12-14 record.
