COLUMBUS—The Polk County Historical Society recently announced an exclusive Historic Home Tour of the Dunwyck House, a magnificent Tudor revival mansion designed in 1926 by Devereux Van Akin (1898-1965), one of America’s first notable female architects.

Located at 64 Peniel Road in Columbus, this estate was originally built as a seasonal retreat for prominent Chicagoans Herbert Cushman Metcalf (1857-1937) and Mae Holmes Metcalf (1887-1982), who hosted grand gatherings with distinguished guests such as F. Scott Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, First Lady Grace G. Coolidge, and General George C. Marshall.

Nestled within 20 acres of lush greenery, Dunwyck Mansion is a storybook retreat surrounded by misty peaks that enhance its whimsical charm. This two-story home is a rare architectural gem, blending locally sourced granite, timber, and brick to create a timeless masterpiece. Despite its grand 6,000-square-foot expanse, the mansion offers cozy English-style living, seamlessly integrating modern updates while preserving its historic character.

The name “Dunwyck” reflects its essence—“Dun” from the Gaelic-Irish and Scottish word for castle, and “Wyck” from the Dutch and Swedish word for place of abundance—a fitting tribute to its rich history and enduring beauty. With 21 rooms, soaring cathedral ceilings, and breathtaking views, Dunwyck remains a cherished landmark, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of elegance and grandeur.

Having passed through five owners, the Dunwyck House is now a permanent residence for its current owners, the first to live there year-round. The estate is listed on North Carolina’s study list and is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in architectural, cultural, and historical categories.

This special event offers a rare glimpse into the home’s rich history and remarkable architecture while supporting the Polk County Historical Society.
