Polk County’s softball season came to an end Tuesday as the Wolverines fell 8-1 to South Stokes in the opening round of the 1A state playoffs.
The Sauras (16-8) jumped ahead early with two runs in the first inning, highlighted by Ryleigh Pinnix’s two-out, two-run homer. South Stokes added two more runs in both the second and fourth innings, effectively building an insurmountable lead against the visiting Wolverines.
Polk County (10-13) struggled to generate offense throughout the contest, managing just six hits against South Stokes pitching. The Wolverines’ lone run came in the sixth inning when Tory Coile opened with a single and later scored on Mia Bradley’s fielder’s choice after Aslyn Scruggs had singled.
Coile led the Wolverines offensively, going 2-for-3 with the team’s only run. Bradley, Junie Mitchell, Miya Jackson and Scruggs each added one hit in the season-ending defeat.
South Stokes’ balanced offensive attack produced 11 hits, building steady pressure throughout the game with runs in five of their six innings at bat.
