A six-run fourth inning proved decisive as Chase High School defeated Polk County 9-4 in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference softball action Wednesday at Polk County.
The loss dropped the Wolverines to 10-10 overall and 4-6 in conference play, while Chase improved to 12-8 overall and strengthened its conference position at 7-3.
Polk County struck first when Mia Bradley singled in the opening inning, stole second base and scored on Junie Mitchell’s single. However, Chase answered with three runs in the third inning before breaking the game open with its six-run outburst in the fourth.
The Wolverines attempted to rally, scoring once in the fourth inning when Aslyn Scruggs delivered an RBI single following an error and a hit by pitch that loaded the bases. Polk County added two more runs in the fifth when Elizabeth Vitale’s single to left-center field drove in Laney Littlefield and Mitchell, who had both reached base with singles.
Mitchell led Polk County offensively, finishing 3-for-4 with an RBI. Scruggs contributed a 2-for-3 performance with an RBI, while Elizabeth Vitale drove in two runs with her fifth-inning hit.
Chase’s offensive production came primarily from Myra Beaver, who went 3-for-4 with a triple, home run and four RBI. Beaver also earned the pitching victory, working five innings while allowing just three hits and striking out five Wolverine batters.
Polk County returns to action Tuesday, traveling to East Rutherford for another Mountain Foothills 7 Conference matchup.
