Polk County snapped a four-game losing streak Tuesday, defeating Mountain Foothills 7 Conference rival Patton 8-5 at The Bottoms for its first conference victory of the season.
The Wolverines (7-10, 1-6) took control early with a four-run second inning. Alex Perry’s double ignited the rally, followed by a Noah Harden single. Gunnar Alm drove in Perry with a single before Mark Jarrett cleared the bases with a double to left field. Karson Scruggs capped the scoring with an RBI single.
Harden handled mound duties for Polk County, going the distance while scattering 12 hits. Despite allowing five runs, only two were earned as the senior right-hander recorded seven strikeouts.
Polk County built a 6-3 lead through four innings and added insurance runs in the sixth when Jarrett drew a bases-loaded walk and Jayce Edwards scored on a wild pitch.
The Wolverines’ offense was paced by Alm, who went 2-for-2 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Jarrett finished 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI, while Perry went 1-for-2 with a double and two runs scored. Harden contributed by going 1-for-2 with two runs scored, Scruggs went 1-for-3 and Edwards scored a run despite going hitless.
Alm etched his name in the school record books twice during the contest, setting a new school mark with 60 career walks, breaking the previous record of 59 set by Nic Johnson (1996-98). Alm also tied Daniel McEntyre’s school record of 72 career stolen bases established from 2002-05.
The Panthers (8-9, 2-7) mounted a seventh-inning rally with two runs but couldn’t complete the comeback.
The teams will conclude their season series Thursday at Patton.
