SOFTBALL: Opportunistic Blue Devils snap Wolverines’ win streak

Brevard capitalized on two-out opportunities to defeat Polk County 8-3 in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference softball action Friday at Polk County.

The Blue Devils (13-5, 5-3) scored six of their eight runs with two outs, building an early lead that the Wolverines (9-6, 3-3) couldn’t overcome. The loss snapped Polk County’s five-game winning streak.

Brevard jumped ahead with three runs in the first inning. Polk County responded with a run in the bottom half when Mia Bradley singled, stole second base and eventually scored on Sarah Vitale’s RBI single.

The Wolverines added two more runs in the second inning. Tory Coile singled with one out and advanced to second on Emma Hayford’s groundout. Aslyn Scruggs and Bradley followed with consecutive RBI singles, evening the score at 3-3.

The Blue Devils reclaimed control with three runs over the next two innings, scoring once in the third and four times in the fourth. Brevard’s pitching shut down Polk County’s offense the rest of the way, holding the Wolverines scoreless for the final five innings.

Bradley led Polk County’s offense, finishing 2-for-4 with an RBI. Junie Mitchell, Vitale, Coile and Scruggs each added one hit.

Polk County returns to action Monday, traveling to Landrum for a 7:30 p.m. non-conference matchup.
