Saturday’s matinee felt too much like a rerun for Polk County.
Brunch at The Bottoms didn’t prove tasty for the Wolverines, with defensive miscues helping Brevard escape with a 7-5 victory in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference matchup.
Polk County (6-9, 0-5) committed four errors in the setback, bringing its total to 18 in its past three games, all this week. Two of those came in a four-run fourth inning that ultimately proved deciding for Brevard (9-8, 3-5).
Yet, say this for the Wolverines – despite the rough week, they kept battling. Down 6-2 after that fourh inning, Polk pushed across two runs in the fifth on a Gunnar Alm RBI single and a Avrey Hensley sacrifice fly, slicing the deficit in half.
Two walks and two stolen bases allowed Brevard to score a run in the sixth, but the Wolverines again threatened in the bottom half of the frame, getting two runners on with one out before the Blue Devils stiffened.
Alm then led off the bottom of the seventh with his sixth home run of the season, a shot down the right-field line. Karson Scruggs followed with a single, but Brevard reliever Liam McCrary induced three straight fly balls to end the game.
The 11 a.m. start time didn’t slow either offense. The Blue Devils scored once in the top of the first before Polk answered with a pair of runs in its turn at bat. Alm opened the inning with a sharply-hit ball to left-center for a double before Scruggs singled. Scruggs stole second before, with one out, Mason Beiler ripped a drive into the left-field corner to score both runners and put Polk up 2-1.
The score stood at 2-2 before the disastrous fourth. The Blue Devils strung together four singles, one of those on a bunt, and took advantage of the two Polk errors to push four runs across the plate and take a 6-2 lead. That margin proved too much for the Wolverines to overcome in the end.
The day was not a complete loss for Polk’s defense. Alm made a spectacular diving catch to save two runs in the third, and first baseman Aaron Jackson ranged to his right to stop a ground ball, then slid into first to beat the runner for an out later in the game.
Alm finished 3-for-4 with three runs and two RBI. Scruggs added a 2-for-4 effort, with Beiler, Noah Harden and Mark Jarrett each adding base hits.
Polk County was set to travel Monday to Hendersonville for a rescheduled conference game.
