Back on the pitch for the first time since March 24, Polk County’s girl’s soccer team showed no signs of rust, defeating East Rutherford 4-1 Monday night in a soggy G.M. Tennant Stadium in Mountain Foothills 7 Conference play.

The Wolverines (7-1, 5-1) built a commanding 3-0 halftime lead behind Reeve Carroll’s two early goals and maintained control throughout the second half.

Carroll opened the scoring in the seventh minute after defender Jill Brown kept a goal kick in East Rutherford territory. Carroll gained possession, dribbled forward and delivered a low one-hopper from approximately 30 yards that eluded the goalkeeper.

The freshman doubled Polk’s advantage in the 19th minute, intercepting a pass and navigating past a defender before unleashing a high arching shot from the left top of the penalty area that narrowly escaped the goalkeeper’s fingertips, giving Carroll her 11th goal of the season.

Polk County’s third goal came in the 29th minute when goalkeeper Cate Brown’s long clearance found Gabby Savaia, who outpaced two East Rutherford defenders and chipped the ball past the charging goalkeeper into the right side of the net.

The Wolverines added their fourth goal in the 61st minute when defender Natalie Serrano controlled a throw-in and delivered a pass to Savaia, who converted her second goal with a precise low shot from 10 yards out on the right side into the left corner of the net.

East Rutherford (4-9, 2-6) managed to end Polk County’s impressive defensive streak in the 74th minute with a goal from a corner kick. The score marked the first goal allowed by Polk since its March 11 loss to Hendersonville, ending a scoreless period spanning 516 minutes and 30 seconds.

Polk County will face a significant test Thursday when they host Brevard at 6:45 p.m. in a matchup of top conference schools. The Blue Devils currently are undefeated in conference play and share the MF7 lead with Hendersonville, with the two teams set to meet on Tuesday.
