Construction underway, possible opening Memorial Day

CHIMNEY ROCK— The North Carolina Department of Transportation recently announced that a temporary bridge from U.S. 64/74A to Chimney Rock Park Road will be installed to provide residents and visitors access to Chimney Rock State Park. The temporary bridge will be located just west of the old truss bridge that served Southside Drive.

Wright Brothers Construction, contracted by NCDOT, plans to open the bridge by Memorial Day weekend if weather permits.

For permanent repairs, NCDOT officials selected a reconstruction plan combining the Chimney Rock Park Road and Southside Drive bridges into one. That bridge will start at a new roundabout at the former location of Old Rock Café, cross the river, and connect with Chimney Rock Park Road, providing access to Southside Drive.

Construction of the permanent bridge will commence in 2026 after nearby sections of U.S. 64/74A are reconstructed.
