LANDRUM—On Saturday, April 5, the Landrum Farmers Market marked its 25th anniversary with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and pancake breakfast at the Joe Cunningham Pavilion at 221 W. Rutherford St.

Buddy Williams, who has witnessed the market’s evolution as a vendor through its three locations, the Train Depot, Trade Street, and the current building, joined Alice Jackson, a former market manager who painted the artwork displayed in the pavilion, to cut the ceremonial ribbon.

The Landrum Farmers Market began in 2000 in the Train Depot parking lot when Charlie Pace, one of its founders, backed his truck up and started selling fresh produce. Pace’s truck was parked beside the pavilion on this special day as a nostalgic reminder of the market’s humble beginnings.

The anniversary celebration drew a large crowd of enthusiastic locals and vendors. Each vendor showcased placards indicating their years of service, with sixteen legacy vendors who started at the Train Depot proudly participating in the event.

Gerald Rollins of Rollins Farm, a vendor for 18 years, shared his appreciation for the market. “I started coming here to sell my fresh produce 18 years ago, and the Landrum Market has been very, very good to me in that time,” he said. “I’ve enjoyed getting to know the customers and the other vendors.”

JoAnn James, co-manager of the market, expressed her gratitude for community support. “We’re very excited about the turnout and all the support we receive from the community, which has allowed us to make it for 25 seasons,” she shared.

Attendees savored delicious pancakes from P3 Paws for Retail, enjoyed freshly brewed coffee from Bluebird Coffee, and were entertained by live music throughout the market.

Co-Manager Kristen Johnston added, “We’re thankful to see so many returning vendors and customers and are looking forward to another successful season.”

Throughout the week leading up to the anniversary, the market shared heartwarming stories on Facebook, celebrating its legacy.

Among the featured stories was that of Mrs. Cecelia McClure, who has been a beloved part of the market for 15 years. Joining with her son, Dean, Cecelia began canning at just 18 years old to ensure her family could enjoy homegrown produce throughout the year. She fondly remembers selling alongside neighbors Joe Cunningham and Joyce Davis, who she describes as some of the kindest individuals she has ever met.

Another cherished figure at the market is Shannon Dotson, known as “The Pepper Man.” Before he became a City Council member, Shannon sold peppers and an array of vegetables at the Depot Farmers Market nearly 20 years ago. He recalls the camaraderie with early vendors like Brandon Higgins and Dean McClure, who helped establish a strong community connection.

Shannon remains committed to the market, serving on the Landrum Farmers Market Advisory Board and contributing to community discussions and initiatives.

As the Landrum Farmers Market embarks on another season, its vendors’ dedication and the community’s support promise to keep this cherished tradition vibrant for many more years to come. For more information or to sign up as a vendor, visit landrumfarmersmarket.com.
