MILL SPRING— On Saturday, May 3, starting at 4 p.m., Bright’s Creek Equestrian Center will host a Derby Day Party to benefit Guiding Reins, a local organization dedicated to assisting first responders and others in high-stress professions.
The community is invited to join in the excitement and watch the Kentucky Derby at the event. The Derby Day Party promises an afternoon filled with fun, including a free BBQ, a hat contest, and a silent auction. All proceeds from the silent auction at the party will go directly to Guiding Reins, furthering their mission of serving those who support our community.
Recently, Guiding Reins and Brights Creek also teamed up to hold a much-needed retreat for community first responders, providing essential support in the wake of challenges stemming from Hurricane Helene. The event featured equine-assisted sessions and art therapy designed to offer relaxation and healing. Participants overwhelmingly praised the experience, describing it as enlightening, peaceful, and calming.
One responder noted, “My heart and soul needed it, and I hope I can come again.”
Guiding Reins plans to host these retreats regularly to ensure that first responders continue to receive the support they need.
Guiding Reins also stepped in to feed first responders dealing with the Polk County wildfires last Friday. Diane Prewitt and Kitty Bateman Kestler coordinated with local stores to gather grab-and-go meals to assist first responders battling local fires. Through their efforts and the quick support of Jesse, the manager at Aldi in Landrum, Prewitt was able to fill her truck with essential food and drinks for our first responders.
Guiding Reins remains committed to being a lifeline for individuals in high-stress careers, including military personnel, first responders, and their loved ones. Their innovative equine-assisted wellness programs are designed to empower participants to manage stress and trauma, fostering resilience and new pathways for healing.
Residents are encouraged to RSVP for the Derby Day Party, which is sponsored by Beverly-Hanks realtors, by contacting Heather Chambers or JJ Murphy. For more information, visit www.guidingreins.org.
