Polk County’s boys tennis team strengthened their position in the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference standings on Wednesday, completing a doubleheader sweep against Patton in Morganton.

The Wolverines claimed the opening match 8-1 before delivering a decisive 9-0 shutout in the second contest, improving their season record to 5-4 while Patton remains winless at 0-8.

In the first match, Polk County demonstrated its depth by winning five of six singles matches. Senior Riley Ballentine set the tone with a convincing 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 2 singles, while sophomore Harris Windsor recorded the day’s first perfect score with a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 5 singles. Sophomores Charlie Wagoner, Morgan Allen and Grayson Meyer all secured straight-set victories to build Polk’s commanding lead.

Patton’s lone point came at No. 1 singles, where Bryant Arrowood outlasted Polk County senior Banks Barber in a hard-fought match that required a second-set tiebreaker, 6-4, 7-6 (7-2).

The Wolverines swept all three doubles matches to complete the 8-1 victory, with the No. 3 team of Allen and Windsor cruising to an 8-0 win.

Barber bounced back impressively in the second match, reversing his earlier result with a convincing 8-2 win over Arrowood at No. 1 singles. The Wolverines dominated throughout the lineup in the pro-set format, with no Patton player winning more than four games in any singles contest.

Polk County’s doubles teams were equally impressive in the second match, with the No. 1 pairing of Barber and Ballentine and the No. 2 team of Windsor and Wagoner both recording 8-0 shutouts.

The Wolverines will conclude their regular season on April 7, hosting conference rival Hendersonville in a 4 p.m. home match
