POLK COUNTY—On Tuesday, March 25, a North Carolina Emergency Management rescue team assisted in extracting a firefighter working to contain one of the wildfires.
Over the weekend, NCEM activated the NC Helo-Aquatic Rescue Team and staged a North Carolina National Guard Blackhawk with rescue technicians to respond quickly to the Black Cove Fire Complex.
According to NCEM, an urgent call for assistance came for the team, call sign “Kill Devil 60,” when a firefighter battling the wildfires suffered a leg injury after being trapped under a tree that fell. The firefighter was successfully extracted, transferred to Polk County EMS, and taken to Spartanburg Regional Medical Center. There are no updates on the firefighter’s conditions of press time.
Officials say Kill Devil 60 and the crew is back in staging and ready to respond if any firefighter needs help.
