TRYON—On Saturday, March 22, Roseland Community Center paid tribute to several historic women of the Eastside in celebration of Women’s History Month.
The luncheon program featured tributes to former teachers, women pastors, and community activists who taught in segregated schools, organized and helped build churches, and sustained the Eastside Community in numerous ways, not the least of which was their devotion to the young people of the community.
Those recognized with citations this year were Helen Harris Hannon, Annie Belle Tucker, Esther W. Robinson, Elsie J. Copper, Rev. Zenobia Sheppard, Wessye Lee Jackson, and Carrie Lee Massey. Also, during the program, The Carrie Lee Massey Award for Community Service was presented to Angela Counts-Logan “for her tireless efforts in voter registration/voter participation in the Eastside Community and beyond.” The Massey Award, established in 2018 by Roseland Community Center’s Board of Directors, was named to honor the lifelong community service activities of Miss Massey, widely known as “the Spirit of Roseland.” It is presented periodically to recognize the significant community service efforts of an Eastside resident who also embodies the unselfish spirit of Miss Massey.
Dr. Joseph Fox, Roseland Vice-President and Program Chair, noted of the inaugural celebration of women of the Eastside that “there is a long list of historic women who need to be recognized and we will do so annually from this point forward.”
