Black Cove, Deep Woods, Fish Hook wildfires 0% contained
POLK COUNTY—Three wildfires in the northwestern area of Polk County have grown in size throughout the day, with at least 1,000 acres burned as of Thursday evening.
The Black Cove Fire was first reported at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 19, in the 4000-5000 block of Green River Cove Rd. near Saluda. According to the N.C. Forest Service, the Black Cove Fire has now burned 583 acres and is 0% contained. The fire originated due to a downed power line.
Dry weather, steep terrain and high winds have made efforts to control the fire challenging, officials say.
No structures have been lost, and a voluntary evacuation was in effect for residents of Scarlets Mountain Rd.
A second wildfire off Deep Woods Ln. spread overnight as well, and is now 332 acres with 0% containment. Located in the Piney Mountain Community off Holbert Cove Rd., officials say the Deep Woods Fire has threatened several structures, but those structures are being protected by engine companies.
The cause of this fire is unknown and is currently under investigation.
Residents in the following areas were told to evacuate:
- Deepwoods Lane
- Wesley Lane
- Piney Gate Rd
- Piney Overlook Lane
- Piney Gate Rd
- Gamelands Trail
- Oakview Lane
- Volley Way
- Charity Branch Dr
- Windsong Ln
- Moonshine Trace

A third fire in the Lake Adger community started Thursday evening, and has grown to at least 150 acres at 0% containment. Residents in the following areas were told to evacuate:
- Lake Adger from Jackson to Highland Lane
- Parkway North Rd from Lake Adger to North Park Lane
- North Park Lane
- North Boundry Rd
- North Martin Lane
The N.C. Forest Service has been conducting operations with approximately 70 firefighters on the ground and multiple agencies assisting.
The fires come on the heels of a wildfire that burned 619 acres earlier this month near Tryon and Saluda, and warnings from officials that conditions in the area put the region at a high risk for fire danger.
