Hang around Polk County’s dugout long enough and you’ll inevitably hear a common shout from head coach Billy Alm.

“Do your job.” Sometimes it’s “do your job, kid.” But the message is a simple and oft-repeated one.

The Wolverines had a number of players do the right things at the right time Wednesday, and that led to a come-from-behind 5-4 victory over Landrum at The Bottoms.

Polk County (5-4) wasn’t at its sharpest, but the Wolverines found a path to victory after seeing an early two-run lead evaporate when Landrum (7-3) put together a four-run rally in the third inning.

Polk responded with three runs in the fourth, then relied on starter Noah Harden and reliever Avrey Hensley to keep the Cardinals at bay over their final three at-bats.

“Obviously, with our injuries, we’re putting pieces together,” Alm said. “Bats have been kind of quiet. But we had some timely hitting tonight.

“A great effort on the mound. Noah didn’t have his best stuff tonight, but he sat out there and battled. And then Avery, coming in off an injury. He was our potential closer before he got hurt. Here is tonight, goes out there and throws strikes.”

Hensley also started Polk’s game-winning rally in the fourth, lacing a one-out fly ball to the left-field wall for a triple. Harden followed with a single to right to drive in Hensley and make it a 4-3 game, with Nate Fagan then also pushing a grounder to right for a base hit.

Karson Scruggs, returning to the lineup from an injury but limited to the designated hitter’s role, smacked a low line drive just inside the third-base line, that ball bounding into the left-field corner for a double that brought home courtesy runner Zalen McCraw to tie the game.

Cooper Meyer then delivered an infield grounder that allowed Fagan to score with what proved to be the winning run.

Returning to the sport for the first time since he was a small child, Meyer has provided a boost to the Wolverine lineup during the recent run of injuries.

“Cooper barreled three balls tonight, and he’s been a godsend in the outfield,” Alm said. “He’s just like a deer out there, running around and grabbing everything that’s in the air.”

Harden allowed just one runner in his final two innings of work before turning it over to Hensley, who surrendered a one-out base hit before getting the final two batters to end the game.

Polk took an early 1-0 lead as Gunnar Alm launched an 0-2 pitch over the fence in right-center, a line-drive rocket for his third homer of the season. The Wolverines then doubled their lead in the second inning as Hensley was hit by a pitch, stole second and scored on Harden’s single to center.

Landrum’s Durham McEntire launched a two-run homer to left in the top of the third to highlight the Cardinals’ four-run rally. But Landrum would only get one runner into scoring position the rest of the evening as Polk silenced the Cardinal offense.

Harden finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, with Mark Jarrett also 2-for-3. Alm, Hensley, Fagan and Scruggs each added base hits.

Harden scattered seven hits and struck out two in his six innings of work.

Polk County returns to action Thursday, traveling to East Henderson for another non-conference game.

“We’re putting it together,” Billy Alm said. “I feel like we’re getting better each day. Tomorrow’s a new day and we’ll see what happens tomorrow.”
