TRYON—The Tryon Concert Association will present the guitar trio Avanti at its second TGIF concert on Friday, March 21, at 6 p.m. at the Tryon Fine Arts Center.
Avanti was formed in 2010 by Amy Brucksch, Julie Goldberg, and Christoper Teves, who were then students at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Since their student days, they have performed at venues in Western North Carolina and beyond. The ensemble is known for playing with verve, subtlety, and excellent technique.
Amy Brucksch is well-known to Tryon audiences and has performed with classical ensembles, African percussionists, Celtic fiddlers, and other groups. She is currently on the music faculty of the Thomas Jefferson Classical Academy.
Julie Goldberg is the first guitarist to receive a Doctorate in Music Performance from Northwestern University and holds degrees from other noted conservatories. She is also an educator, having taught at many conservatories of music.
Composer and guitarist Christopher Teves has performed with orchestras and chamber ensembles. His compositions have been played by the North Charleston Pops, the Eclipse Ensemble, the Silver Rose Duo, and Chamber Music Charleston. The audience will hear one of his compositions at this concert.
The ensemble has an extensive repertoire that ranges from Baroque to classical, rock to pop, and jazz to contemporary. The program for the Tryon performance includes works by Luigi Boccherini and Padre Antonio Soler, representatives of the Baroque tradition. Contemporary pieces will include “Japur River” by Philip Glass, “Turning” by Ronald Pearl, “Hope” by Fredrik Holm, and “Baio de Gude” by Paolo Bellinati. John Lennon and Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird” and George Harrison’s “Here Comes the Sun” are included. “Through a Radiant Light” by Christopher Teves and the traditional American song “Shenandoah” round out the program.
TGIF concerts are hour-long informal events noted for the close interaction between musicians and audience and an excellent way to start the weekend. Come early to enjoy the cash bar.
