A 10-run second inning proved too much to overcome Thursday as Polk County dropped a 14-2 decision at Cherryville in non-conference softball action.

The Lady Wolverines (4-2) missed a key opportunity in the opening frame, loading the bases with one out but failing to push any runs across. That proved costly as Cherryville (2-2) erupted for 10 runs in the second inning to seize control of the game.

Polk County finally broke through in the top half of the third. With two outs, junior Junie Mitchell reached base on an error and later scored on Elizabeth Vitale’s single. But Cherryville responded with four runs in the bottom of the third and ended the windy afternoon in the fifth by run rule.

Mitchell, Elizabeth Vitale and Sarah Vitale each collected one hit in the shortened game.

Despite the setback, Polk County still holds a solid 4-2 record heading into conference play. The Lady Wolverines will look to bounce back when they open Mountain Foothills 7 Conference action on Tuesday, traveling to R-S Central for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
