COLUMBUS—Among the vendors, one stands out: Mayhem Farms, based in Sunny View and run by Kina Baddorf and her family.
The name “Mayhem Farms” has a charming backstory.
“When we bought our farm over a decade ago, we had one child, another on the way, and three goats that tended to run away,” Kina shared with a smile. “Now, we have five children, and it just seemed like the name fit.”
Kina, who has always had a passion for baking, delights marketgoers with scones and fresh coffee, which are popular choices at the market for those seeking a quick breakfast. Her selection of sourdough bread, available in flavors like jalapeno cheddar, plain, and sun-dried tomato, contributes to her growing reputation. For those interested in home baking, she also offers sourdough starter kits and oatmeal raisin cookies for dessert.
In addition to her baked goods, Kina crafts a range of handy items, including bags, jar covers, and neck warmers. For those looking to brighten up their home, she provides colorful potted daffodils that make perfect centerpieces and even hand-carved tomato stakes.
Having worked the Columbus Markets for about two and a half years, Baddorf was inspired to join after visiting as a customer. Her children often join her at the booth, helping out especially when Kina gets busy. Kina believes this experience teaches them valuable life skills, such as making change and engaging with new people.
“This market is wonderful, and I don’t think people realize how much fresh local food we have here, even at the Winter Market,” says Baddorf. “We also have great customers, and one of my favorite parts is seeing the older retired folks who make the time to come out.”
The Columbus Winter Market takes place on the first and third Saturday of each month, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. behind Iron Key Brewing Co,at 135 Locust St.
