POLK COUNTY—The Spivey family has announced it will once again partner with the Sunny View Clubhouse in awarding the Norman L. Spivey Memorial Scholarship.
Norman was a Polk County native and a Polk Central High School graduate who would go on to become a U.S. Marine, a successful civil engineer, a passionate conservationist, and a community volunteer. He held a deep appreciation of nature and understood our individual responsibility of preserving our local resources for future generations, giving his time to volunteer with a host of organizations such as Boy Scouts of America, the Polk County Gun Club, and the Sunny View Clubhouse. The family is proud to follow his example and create a tradition of investing in the young people of our community as they seek to further their education and pursue their own passions.
The scholarship has been awarded to six PCHS students over the years: John Doughtery (2018), Evan Rimer (2019), Angela Price (2020), M. Zappia (2021), Maggie Holland (2022), and Samantha Durham (2024). These students have gone on to study at Isothermal Community College, UNC Charlotte, Appalachian State University, UNC Asheville, and NC State University.
This scholarship is open to any Polk senior interested in pursuing an educational opportunity in civil engineering (a career that deals with the design, construction, or maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment) or conservation field. Community College, Tech School, and Four-Year University Options are all supported. Students can contact their guidance counselor for the official application.
