There likely won’t be any more nights such as Tuesday for Polk County’s girls basketball team.
The Wolverines had little trouble in cruising to a 70-30 victory over R-S Central in the semifinals of the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference Basketball Tournament, matching a school record with their 12th consecutive victory.
All 11 players who saw the floor for Polk County scored, including four freshmen, as the Wolverines marched into Friday’s tournament championship game. That one will also be at Polk, at 6 p.m., and will match the Wolverines against 19-5 Hendersonville.
Polk eked out a hard-fought four-point win against the Bearcats in their most recent meeting. Friday’s championship should be equally challenging, with the state 1A playoffs then set to start next Tuesday.
Kylie Lewis scored 12 first-quarter points as Polk raced to a 26-8 advantage, then built the lead to 44-14 by halftime. That gave head coach Brandy Alm, in her 250th game leading the Wolverine program, a chance to substitute freely in the second half.
Lewis finished with 18 points and also became the school’s all-time rebounds leader during the game, surpassing the previous record of 902 rebounds set by Kim Staley Fettig.
Bailey Staton added 15 points, with Jayden Duncan scoring eight and Mia Bradley adding six. Reeve Carroll had five points, with Amiyah Waters, Sofie Abrahamsen and Kiera Littlejohn each scoring four.
Charley Dusenbury, Honesty Jackson and Jeri Allen each finished with two points.
