POLK COUNTY—Congressman Tim Moore is leading an initiative to designate a segment of U.S. 74 as a future interstate highway. This proposal comes as House Resolution 1333, introduced by Moore, who represents North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District.

The bill, co-sponsored by fellow Republican Congressman Chuck Edwards (NC-11), aims to upgrade a 50-mile stretch of U.S. 74 from Columbus to Kings Mountain, linking I-26 and I-85.

“For many of my constituents, U.S. 74 is a heavily traveled route for commuting, commerce, and daily life, and upgrading it to future interstate status will bring long-overdue improvements,” Moore says.

He adds that this designation would create new economic development opportunities, attract businesses to the region, and ensure that the highway meets interstate standards.

Moore noted that Rutherford County currently lacks an interstate within its borders, making this designation even more critical for enhancing regional connectivity. His office stated that the improvements are expected to bolster the area’s economic prospects and more effectively link communities.

As the process moves forward, Moore expressed gratitude to Congressman Edwards for his previous efforts in advancing this initiative, and he reaffirmed his commitment to continuing the work necessary to secure the future interstate status for U.S. 74.
