GIRLS BASKETBALL: Polk tops East Rutherford, secures outright league title

Polk County secured its first outright conference championship in two decades Tuesday night, defeating East Rutherford 62-47 in Bostic.

The Wolverines (19-1, 11-0) pulled away in the third quarter, turning a six-point halftime advantage into a comfortable victory over the Cavaliers (10-14, 8-4) to wrap up sole possession of the Mountain Foothills 7 Conference crown. Polk last won a girls basketball conference title in 2005.

Kylie Lewis finished with 20 points and eight rebounds, including 10 points during the pivotal third quarter. Bailey Staton added 17 points, including two crucial 3-pointers early in the third quarter that sparked an 11-2 run, pushing Polk County’s lead to 40-27.

East Rutherford mounted a comeback, cutting the deficit to 43-37, but the Wolverines responded with seven unanswered points to maintain control. The Cavaliers never got closer than eight points the rest of the way.

Charley Dusenbury contributed eight points and eight assists for Polk County, while Kiera Littlejohn also scored eight. Reeve Carroll added six points and Mia Bradley chipped in three to round out the scoring.

The Wolverines controlled the opening quarter, building a 19-12 lead, and maintained their advantage through a low-scoring second period to enter halftime up 29-23.

Polk County will look to complete an undefeated conference schedule Friday when they close their regular season at Brevard.
