This week at The Tryon Theatre is “Gladiator II,” rescheduled from the week in January, during which the snow and ice led to the closure of most of our shows. A proper and complete review of “Gladiator II” was already published during that week of inclement weather and can be found on The Tryon Daily Bulletin website under “Film Talk.” I will briefly introduce the film below, but most of this column will address the practical logistics of this rescheduled film.
This sequel picks up 25 years after the first “Gladiator” film, with the narrative having advanced the same amount of time. With the first film’s protagonist passing at the culmination of the story, this film picks up with a predominantly new cast of characters while keeping us firmly footed in the familiar territory of Rome and the microcosm of the Colosseum’s gladiatorial spectacles. Like the first film, there is a well-crafted central narrative and a sense of grandeur evoked by the Roman setting, but those elements are second in satisfaction to the voyeuristic thrills of action and combat. The “Gladiator” films offer entertainment value in the same capacity as the titular subject, a promise of intensity, physical prowess, and the ever-gripping contest of wills, a visual feast of vicarious excitement.
For any customer whose tickets were affected by the closures that week, they will be allowed to apply those tickets to this new show. If any customer had purchased their tickets online (and have not already used that credit to attend a different show or receive a refund), we will have their name saved on a list, and they need only provide that name upon checking in, out front of the theatre. Any customer who had a paper ticket to any of those closures of “Gladiator II” can simply present the ticket upon check-in, and it will be treated as a ticket for the new shows.
We do not require that customers give us a heads up as to which exact showtime they would like to attend for their “make-up” shows of “Gladiator II”; however, it will certainly never hurt. For any customer who is logistically unable to apply their credit to this rescheduled week, we will save their name for a future application of credit. Lastly, these new showtimes are, of course, open to fresh customers as well and are not restricted to those who suffered closures during that snow week. Tickets can be purchased at the theatre whenever we are open or online at your convenience.
We hope everyone will join us, make-up or not, for this thrilling feast of action and spectacle!
