Karsyn Huskey very nearly made her final indoor track and field meet one for the history books.

Huskey blazed past the field in the 1000-meter run at Saturday’s WNC Polar Bear Championships, just missing a school record in winning the event with the third-fastest time in the state this season by a 1A runner.

Huskey crossed the line more than five seconds ahead of the field with a time of 3:07.4. That just missed the 3:07.0 record set in the 1996-97 season by Polk standout Jennifer Dimsdale.

Huskey’s effort helped Polk County finish fifth in a 17-team field loaded with many of the area’s top teams. Franklin dominated the girls meet, with Pisgah, Rabun Gap (Ga.) and West Henderson finishing ahead of the Wolverines.

The Polk County boys placed ninth in the 19-team field, with Franklin, Kings Mountain and Pisgah taking the top three spots.

Polk’s girls 4×400-meter relay team posted a time of 4:29.83, taking second in the event and qualifying for the state indoor championships set for Friday, Feb. 14 at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem.

Polk’s Leah Dotson had already qualified for the state meet, but she still set a personal record in clearing 8-0 to finish third in the pole vault. Teammate Louisa Wood also had a PR in the 500-meter run, taking second with a finish of 1:26.62.
