Festivities held at Mill Spring due to park’s closure

MILL SPRING— The annual tradition of Groundhog Day took place once again on Sunday, as Chimney Rock State Park celebrated its 20th Annual Groundhog Day event. This year’s festivities were held at the Tryon International Equestrian Center due to the park’s closure following damage from Tropical Storm Helene.

The day’s highlight was Tater the Groundhog, who popped out of his cabin to predict an early spring and a Super Bowl LIX victory for the Kansas City Chiefs, much to the crowd’s excitement.

Before Tater’s prediction, Chimney Rock General Manager Emily Walker expressed gratitude for being able to host the event at TIEC.

“This is our 20th annual event, so a month ago, we didn’t think we would be able to have it. But TIEC and Sharon Decker said you can come do it here,” Walker said. “So we are very grateful to them since this is one of our favorite events.”

Walker also introduced Chimney Rock Mayor Peter O’Leary, who spoke afterward with citizens about the ongoing rebuilding efforts.

Education Manager Margeau Lance then provided insights into the origins of Groundhog Day, which traces its roots back to Europe. She noted that Tater’s predictions have proven to be about 60% accurate over the years.

Beyond the predictions, attendees enjoyed various family-friendly activities, including ice skating and a carousel, complemented by various dining options that created a festive atmosphere. Visitors were also able to shop along WNC Main Street, supporting local businesses from Chimney Rock affected by the storm that are now set up several days a week at TIEC.
