POLK COUNTY—The Pea Ridge Partnership initiative has announced the successful completion of a tour designed to empower youth and seniors in Polk County to take on the role of tour guides, offering participants an opportunity to share their stories and experiences while highlighting important local landmarks.
The tour included several notable stops, such as the historic Good Shepherd Church at its original location on the Green River Plantation, the Ponderville School site—one of the renowned Rosenwald Schools—Grays Chapel Church, Moores Grove Baptist Church, the Stony Knoll Library and Community Center, established by the esteemed Della Jackson, and Tryon International Equestrian Center. The tour was led by esteemed African-American local elders: Barbara Miller, a faithful member of Wheat Creek Baptist Church; Rev. Spencer Wilkins, a respected local farmer in Polk County; Carver Jackson, a distinguished mechanical engineer from the area, and Meghan Lamb, a staff member at TIEC.
“Polk County is rich in history, and our elders are the keepers of that heritage,” said Tanisha Akinloye, Executive Director of Pea Ridge Partnership. “By empowering them to share their stories, we not only honor their contributions but also enhance our community’s cultural fabric. This initiative will allow our seniors to take pride in their experiences while providing visitors and residents alike with a deeper understanding of our local history.”
Local youth Maya Wilkins, a recent Polk County High School graduate, participated in the tour and shared her enthusiasm, stating, “I enjoyed the tour and learned a lot about my history.” Her excitement reflects the program’s goal of fostering a deeper connection between the community’s younger and older generations.
The initiative aims to build bridges between generations and cultures. It promotes teamwork and collaboration among youth and seniors, enhances the community’s cultural richness, and offers participants a chance to develop public speaking skills.
The Pea Ridge Partnership looks forward to continuing this initiative. The next tour is scheduled for Thursday, February 27, 2024, at 1 p.m.
“Join us in celebrating the rich heritage of Polk County and the stories that connect our community,” said Akinloye. “Together, we can preserve our history and share it with future generations.”
