Score it one more for four for Polk County’s wrestling program.

Polk claimed its fourth consecutive Blue Ridge Conference East Division championship on Thursday, sweeping Brevard Middle and Hendersonville Middle in a BRC tri-match in Brevard.

The Wolverines (11-1) topped the Blue Devils 54-43 and the Bearcats 76-29 in their first match since last week’s loss to Apple Valley that snapped a 42-match winning streak. It marks the first team that any Polk Middle team has won four consecutive division titles, and it secures a shot for Polk to try to win its third straight conference championship.

Not bad for what many expected to be a rebuilding year for the program.

“We looked really good bouncing back,” said Polk Middle head coach Jerry Cox. “Rhys (Jackson) bumped up a weight class and beat a really good eighth grader from Brevard to help us win that matchup.

“We’re looking forward to hitting on all cylinders in the coming week and a half.”

Polk will close its regular season on Tuesday, traveling to Flat Rock Middle, before hosting the BRC Individual Conference Tournament on Friday, Jan. 24, at Polk County High School.
