POLK COUNTY—Survivors of Tropical Storm Helene in North Carolina have less than a month to apply for FEMA assistance. The deadline is February 6, and there are several ways to apply.

Those seeking assistance can stop by the FEMA disaster recovery center at the Isothermal Community College Polk Campus next to Columbus Library (1255 West Mills Street) and speak with a FEMA employee in person or apply online at DisasterAssistance.gov.

Another way to connect with a FEMA employee is by calling the FEMA Helpline at 1-800-621-3362. It’s important for survivors to stay in touch with FEMA after they apply for assistance to help keep their recovery on track.

“Stay in touch with FEMA, update your application, and let us know what your continuing needs are,” said FEMA media relations specialist Trey Paul.

So far, more than $303 million has been approved for more than 144,000 households and individuals beginning their recovery. That includes money to help rent a home or apartment as survivors begin their recovery.

“FEMA is here for the long haul for the people of Western North Carolina. Everyone’s recovery is unique and we’re going to be with them every step of the way,” said Paul.
