TRYON—On Tuesday, January 15, the first Tryon Garden Club program of the new year will feature Nancy Basket, a well-known speaker.
Nancy will share her expansive knowledge of how the Cherokee culture has influenced her work as an artist. Nancy will also demonstrate how she uses kudzu to create fascinating paper art, baskets, chandeliers, miniatures, and even how it can be used for food.
Since the late 1980s, Nancy has been traveling South Carolina, teaching students the art of kudzu basket weaving. She has taught in a number of schools, including a rural private school where she had no budget. This enabled her to create low-cost, environmentally friendly art. Native stories of respect were told that encouraged learning and enhanced writing skills. Kudzu paper art became a business, encouraging Nancy to experiment with more basic forms and functions.
Don’t miss this exciting program and bring a friend. The meeting will be held at FENCE at 2 p.m., with a social starting at 1:30.
