Landrum Cardinals, Lady Cardinals tipoff new year at home

LANDRUM—The Landrum Cardinals basketball team experienced a hard-fought battle in their recent matchup on December 30 against the Chapman Panthers, ultimately falling 65-62 at home. The loss is the second game between the two teams this season, with Landrum previously having secured a victory against Chapman. 

Despite the defeat, several players showcased commendable performances. Andrew Coleman led the charge for the Cardinals, recording a double-double with 17 points and 14 rebounds. AJ Lindsey also contributed, adding 14 points and eight rebounds to the team’s efforts.

With a record of 8-4, the Cardinals then faced their first AA Region 1 game of the season on January 2 against the Liberty Red Devils (1-10). Landrum clinched a solid victory, defeating Liberty 65-47. This win improved their record to 9-4 as they look forward to their upcoming challenge on the road against the Blacksburg Wildcats, who come in at 4-8 for the Region matchup.

On the girl’s side, the Landrum Lady Cardinals had a successful outing against the Chapman Panthers, pulling out a close 43-40 victory. Junior Kylie Fortner led the way with 14 points, followed by Junior Sullivan Price with 11. 

The Lady Cardinals then showcased a dominant defense on January 2, limiting the Liberty Red Devils to 28 points, winning decisively 50-28. This strong performance marked their first Region win of the season and improved their overall record to 6-7.

The Landrum boys and girls varsity teams were set to face off against the Blacksburg Wildcats on Tuesday, January 7.
