LANDRUM—The Nature Conservancy has announced the initiation of a significant bridge replacement project at Blue Wall Preserve, with construction set to commence on January 14. The project aims to address safety concerns associated with the current bridge crossing at Vaughn’s Creek, which has been deemed unsuitable for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
According to Eric Krueger, Director of Science and Stewardship for the South Carolina Field Office of The Nature Conservancy, the existing bridge is in extremely poor condition and poses a significant hazard to users.
“We are committed to ensuring the safety of all visitors, and the existing structure simply cannot remain as it is,” Krueger said.
The Nature Conservancy has contracted Crisp and Crisp, Inc., a qualified engineering and construction firm based in Robbinsville, North Carolina, to oversee the design and construction of the new bridge. During the construction period, which is anticipated to last until March 14, the preserve will be closed to vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
“We understand that this closure may cause some inconvenience,” Krueger said. “However, our priority is the safety and well-being of our community and visitors.”
The conservancy has identified property owners who may be affected by the project.
While the nature of the construction may create temporary disruptions, the long-term benefits promise to ensure safer access to the 16,000-acre Blue Wall Preserve, which is widely known for its diverse ecosystems and recreational opportunities.
The Nature Conservancy encourages any community members with questions or concerns regarding the project to reach out to Eric Krueger directly by email at ekrueger@tnc.org. More information about the bridge replacement and the Preserve can be found at nature.org/southcarolina.
