Hay Bank permanently moved to ensure equine assistance
COLUMBUS—The Sanctuary at Red Bell Run, a dedicated rescue for horses and other equines, is taking significant steps to address the hay crisis affecting local animal owners in the wake of Tropical Storm Helene.
Mary Adams, the founder of Red Bell Run, states that hay costs have skyrocketed as many of the local sources of supply have been compromised. In light of the hay scarcity, Adams has partnered with Fleet of Angels, a national organization based in Colorado that supports equines impacted by natural disasters, to establish a hay bank.
Looking ahead, Adams expresses concern that the hay shortage will continue due to the loss of land suitable for growing hay, since most of it is grown in low-lying areas. Adams worries that the overall supply in upcoming years may be diminished.
Equine owners typically procure hay cuttings in summer and early fall, but this year’s cycle has been severely disrupted. To supplement local shortages, the hay bank has been receiving most of its hay from out of state.
Following the storm, a distribution center was set up at the Tryon International Equestrian Center. Within five and a half weeks, they delivered over 650,000 pounds of hay and essential supplies to more than 4,500 equines, donkeys, goats, and sheep. The hay bank has now been permanently located at the sanctuary, ensuring ongoing assistance for those in need offering not only hay, but horse blankets and other equine necessities as well.
“We have blankets for horses in need. Many owners have lost their shelters,” said Adams. “So if anyone needs a blanket, just provide us with the measurements, and we’ll ensure they have one. We will be here all winter”
The Hay Bank’s current hours are Saturday 9-12 and 1-4, Sunday 1-4. Call 828-863-2017 or email sanctuary@redbellrun.org if you need assistance outside these hours.
