Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

By Diane Nelson

With all its lights, presents, and holiday gatherings, the Christmas Season has been hailed as the most wonderful time of year for many people worldwide. It is the guardian of treasured memories, “best” and worst Christmas presents, savory foods, traditional baked goods, favorite recipes, traditions, and, yes, a few extra pounds.

Hallmark puts a spin on every possible romance scenario, and the best are set during this season, even though they air throughout the year. With all the engagements that happen, it is a romantic time of year, to be sure…with beauty, perfection, and hope as the beacons of the season.

Of course, it’s not like this everywhere. The stress and pressure of purchasing expected gifts can cause a financial burden for folks struggling to make ends meet. And the social pressure of being with “difficult” family members can bring out the worst in people.

If increased alcohol consumption is a “coping method,” disaster is all but inevitable. And with “reduced holiday hours,” support services can be limited. Hence, the “perfect storm.”

In a home where domestic violence lives, aggressive behavior often intensifies under all these conditions. And in an effort “not to ruin the holiday for the children” or to present the illusion of a “happy family,” many victims will remain silent about the abuse.

These are things we don’t think about when the holidays roll around. But here at Steps to Hope, we are very aware of it. If you know someone who needs our services, remember that our hotline is answered 24/7 by a live person. We have emergency shelter if needed. And we are happy to help with a protective order, emergency escape plan, and counseling.

Please don’t hesitate to call us if needed. Let us be the beacon of hope that is needed in these instances during the holidays…You are not alone!
