GIRLS BASKETBALL: Wolverines outlast Eagles to improve to 5-0

It wasn’t the most picturesque of wins Wednesday for Polk County. But a victory the Wolverines will gladly take.

Polk County improved to 5-0 on the season with a 51-41 win at East Henderson, completing a sweep of the Eagles (2-3).

The Wolverines took command of the game in the opening half, building a 20-7 lead by intermission. East closed to within seven in the third period and still trailed just 38-31 with four minutes left in the fourth quarter.

But Bailey Staton drilled a 15-foot jumper, and following a turnover, Charley Dusenbury fed Kiera Littlejohn for a layup that boosted the advantage to 42-31.

Another turnover led to Staton scoring on a fast break, and Staton then hit a 3-pointer to up the lead to 47-31. A Mia Bradley three made it 50-33 with two minutes remaining before the Eagles closed the game with an 8-1 run.

Dusenbury had 11 points and eight assists to pace Polk County, with Littlejohn scoring 10. Staton finished with nine, Lewis had seven points and 11 rebounds and Bradley had six points.

Reeve Carroll added four, with Jeri Allen and Jayden Duncan each scoring two.

The Wolverines travel Friday to Landrum for a non-conference clash.
