TRYON—On Saturday night, the Greenlife Inn at Mimosa buzzed with excitement as Big Brothers Big Sisters of Western North Carolina held its annual fundraising event, the Boot Scootin’ BBQ. The evening was dedicated to raising essential funds to continue the organization’s mentoring efforts, featuring a silent auction and a performance by the Basement Bunch.
Big Brothers Big Sisters foster positive change through mentorship, serving children who often come from disadvantaged backgrounds. The organization pairs these kids with adult mentors who provide vital guidance and support.
One of the event’s highlights was the announcement of the Big Brother and Big Sister of the Year awards. John Trejo received the accolade of Big Brother of the Year, while Jessica Silva was honored as Big Sister of the Year. Both volunteers exemplified exceptional dedication, prioritizing the needs of their “Littles” and significantly impacting their lives as mentors.
In a heartfelt speech, BBBSWNC President & CEO Lelia Duncan expressed gratitude for the community’s support, especially in light of the destruction caused by Tropical Storm Helene.
“Your presence tonight is a powerful statement to the resilience and compassion of our community,” she said. “While this storm has tested our neighborhoods, your participation helps our Littles and contributes to relief efforts for families facing immense hardships.”
The program featured remarks from Program Coordinator Jessica Toney and Chairman and Regional Board Representative Bill Smith, who emphasized the vital role that community involvement plays in the mentoring process. Before the speeches, attendees enjoyed a BBQ dinner prepared by Harry Denton.
Local businesses and sponsors supported the event, including the Polk County Community Foundation, Tryon Estates, Tryon Therapeutic Massage, and Helen Pace Photography, among many others. Duncan acknowledged the generosity of local businesses and thanked everyone for their continued commitment to supporting the organization.
“Though the road ahead may be uncertain, one thing is clear: together, we are stronger. Together, we will rebuild and continue shaping a brighter future—one relationship, one family, one community at a time,” said Duncan.
