Polk County made its final preparation for the state 1A playoffs a winning one Wednesday, blanking Hendersonville 1-0 in a Mountain Foothills 7 Conference match at G.M. Tennant Stadium.
The Wolverines (13-4-3, 8-3-1) will learn their opening-round playoff opponent on Thursday when the North Carolina High School Athletic Association announces postseason brackets. Polk County is expected to be seeded either sixth or seventh in the 1A West bracket and should host its playoff opener on Saturday.
The Wolverines completed a season sweep of the Bearcats (7-8-3, 5-6-1) with a solid defensive effort, recording their seventh shutout of the season. Polk’s front line made certain in the first half that defensive stand would not be in vain.
The teams stood scoreless in the 35th minute when the Wolverines earned a corner kick. Nate Martinez took the corner and lofted his drive just past the near post and near the top of the 6-yard box. There, Connor Meyer raced in unmarked and headed the corner inside the right post for the night’s only score.
Polk’s defense made that lead hold, giving the Wolverines their fourth win in the last six games.
